Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and is situated on the confluence of the Rivers Chelmer & Can. The town is 35 miles from London and has a regular train service to Liverpool Street. Other large towns in the area are Colchester (20 miles) and Southend (20 miles). A number of smaller towns such as Braintree, Witham, Maldon and Ongar are nearer.
The town began life as the Roman town of Caesaromagus in the part of the town that is now called Moulsham. In 1199, Bishop William the then Bishop of London, gave the town a charter to become a Borough. In 1999, the town had many
celebrations to commemorate the 800 years since the granting of this charter.
Chelmsford is famous for being the birthplace of the electronics industry. Guglielmo Marconi established the first radio factory in the world in the town and in 1899 the first radio link between England and France had been made. The first radio station was established in Writtle, a village on the town’s outskirts.
The town is a major administrative centre with the Offices of the Borough Council, County Police Headquarters and the County Courts and Chelmsford Diocese all located within the town centre.
